James "Puggie" McLoud: The all-state leader of the 1966 Linden High School Basketball Team that lost in the state finals to the number one rated team in the state and the country, Weequahic High School. Continued his outstanding round ball career at Ranger Junior College in Texas and West Texas State University where he played in the finals of the N.I.T. in Madison Square Garden. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the N.B.A.
Ed Flanagan: A public servant with the Linden Police Department for thirty plus years and a former minor league player in the Cincinnati Reds farm system, he was a co-founder of the Linden P.A.L. Remembered for his many free hours devoted to the development of young athletes in Linden, he split his coaching and mentoring time between football, baseball and basketball seasons.
John Beriont: The oldest of the three Beriont Brothers to attend Linden High School, he excelled in track, basketball and as the star quarterback of the football team.
He continued his football career at Lehigh University where he was a skilled running back until his graduation in 1940. Joining the service, he became an Army Air Corp pilot in charge of a B-17 flying fortress. After 25 missions over Europe and a promotion to Captain he returned to the states as a flight instructor until his discharge in 1946. Returning to Linden with his family he went to work for Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick and law school at night. In 1953 he passed the bar and was promoted to an attorney’s position with Johnson & Johnson. The field house at Cooper Field is named in his honor.
The 2000 Linden High School Basketball Team: Won the Group IV State Championship for the first time in school history by defeating Bridgewater Raritan by the lopsided score of 57-33. The team was
led by All-American and All-State player
Jamaal Tate who ended his career as the all
time leading scorer in Linden High School
history. Justin Philbert was named M.V.P. of
the championship game. Additionally, the team won the Danbury Connecticut Christmas Tournament and the Watchung Conference Championship with a perfect 14-0 record.
